The Purple Heart, the oldest American military medal still awarded, honors the brave men and women who have suffered injuries or paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country. On Wednesday, Aug. 7, Florida joins the nation in celebrating National Purple Heart Day.

In 2012, Florida became the eighth state to establish an official Purple Heart Day to commemorate the date the award was created in 1782. Then-Gov. Rick Scott, in his proclamation, called upon “all Floridians to pay special tribute to those brave service members who have received the Purple Heart and honor the families of the fallen.”

The national holiday was established in 2014.
